60th ICR edition in Aachen!

At the occasion of the 60th edition of the annual International Colloquium on Refractories (ICR) in Aachen, Imerys Refractory Minerals launches a new lightweight aggregate, Mulcoa® 43 LW.

Test results obtained for HMOR, linear change, and CO resistance for low cement castables containing this lightweight material are very exciting, as will show Dr. Danilo Frulli during a presentation Wednesday, October 18th.

It appears that monolithics based on Mulcoa® 43 LW could be used to design one part/single layer linings, capable of having an acceptable hot face and back-up lining. From a time and efficiency standpoint, the obtained benefit makes Mulcoa® 43 LW a potential game changer in the refractory industry. October 17th, Scot Graddick, Product Manager Fused Silica and Mullite at Imerys Refractory Minerals USA Inc., presents a study about “Economical Engineered Powder Blends for Precision Investment Casting Back-up Slurries”.  This work shows the quite outstanding advantages of Teco-Sil® Hybrid products compared to standard mineral goods when it comes to shell building. Thomas Krumrei and Michael Weissenbacher at Imerys’ Technology Center in Austria and Dr. Danilo Frulli at Imerys Refractory Minerals headquarters were co-producers of the findings.

New lightweight aggregate

To present a new lightweight aggregate, our team would be pleased to welcome you on booth 31 during the 15th international conference on refractories, UNITECR 2017 in Santiago of Chile from September 26 th to 29th.

“Lightweight aluminosilicate aggregate for higher temperature refractory applications” is the title of our contribution to the Energy Saving and Insulation workshop. Scot Graddick, Mulcoa® and Fused Silica product manager at Imerys Refractory Minerals USA will address the topic Wednesday, September 27th at 2.30 pm in the Salon Parque1 of the conference center.

Test results of this highly refractory lightweight chamotte show that it may be considered as a potential game changer in the refractory industry! Indeed, this new aggregate refractory allows producers to potentially install single component linings.

15 Early Stage Researchers wanted for ATHOR!

Image recherchePartner of the ATHOR network, Imerys Refractory Minerals underlines its concern about the future of the refractory industry. Indeed, we measure the importance of cross-disciplinary approaches which will dramatically increase the transfer of scientific knowledge to our refractory-consuming industries in Europe ensuring progress on social, environmental and economic aspects.

ATHOR stands for advanced thermo mechanical multiscale modeling of refractory linings. This innovative, collaborative and interdisciplinary project is dedicated to train Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) in multi engineering fields for a better understanding of thermo mechanical behavior of refractory linings used in iron and steelmaking. The main objective is to develop high-end engineering technologies in material engineering and numerical simulations thanks to an intensive cooperation between academia, raw materials suppliers, refractory producers and end-users.

A 4 year European Training Network program will start in October 2017 as a Marie-Sklodowska-Curie action and will allow 15 committed and highly motivated Early Stage Researchers to craft the future of ceramic materials for high temperature applications.

With 14 international partners, including 8 industrial companies (Altéo Alumina, Imerys Refractory Minerals, Magnesita Refractories, Pyrotek Scandinavia AB, RHI AG, Saint-Gobain, Tata Steel, FIRE) and 6 universities, these young researchers will have the opportunity to collaborate with experts in various research groups and may take advantage of the most sophisticated numerical tools to model, design and predict the life of refractory lining configurations in critical operation conditions.

Trained in scientific, technical and soft skills, the 15 ESRs selected in the program will be the next generation of highly employable scientists and engineers in the refractory industry and related areas. These future PhD will bring the necessary answers to the primary challenges for both the European Steel and Refractory manufacturers linked to cost and availability of raw materials and energy, as well as to environmental and climate change regulation.

Metakaolin: its potential in geopolymers

Virginie Soleil - buste gauche - 04 2017Virginie Soleil-Raynaut, Imerys Refractory Minerals’ ground and calcined clays product manager will review on “Metakaolin: its potential in geopolymers” at the occasion of the 2017 GeopolymerCamp.

Metakaolin is an amorphous state of kaolinite which is obtained by firing a kaolinitic clay at a temperature between 700 and 950°C. Thanks to its pozzolanic behavior and its fine particle size, this category of functional fillers is used in many applications.

Based in French Picardie, the Geopolymer Institute has been organizing the annual GeopolymerCamp since 2009.

The 2017 edition will take place from 10th to 12th July at the University of Picardie, 48 rue d’Ostende, 02100 Saint-Quentin, France. This event is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire to share and learn in an open environment.

This camp is neither a conference, nor a congress. It is a casual, informal meeting between anyone who has something to share in the field of geopolymers, and anyone with the desire to learn, to interact, and to network.

Students, scientists, researchers, engineers from public and private organizations, curious or long-term experienced people in their fields of expertise, professionals involved in a wide range of development, including managers, finance specialists, R&D, marketing, business decision makers, technology and products development specialists.

2017 ACerS Spring Meeting

St. Louis Section and the Refractory Ceramics Division of the American Ceramic Society sponsor the 53rd annual St. Louis spring meeting on refractories with the theme, “Real World Applications of Refractory Testing”. This year,  Imerys Refractory Minerals’ contribution to ACerS will come through Scot Graddick, Technical Director and Product Manager of Mulcoa and Teco. He will address “The effect of aluminosilicate calcine quality on finished monolithic refractory hot properties” at 8.45 am, Wednesday 29th March.

The study was undertaken by Scot Graddick, Dave Tucker, Chris Beiter, Danilo Frulli from Imerys Refractory Minerals and  Steffen Möhmel refractory engineer from the Center for Abrasive & Refractory Research & Development C.A.R.R.D The outcomes and results will be presented for the first time during the ACerS spring meeting.

In its December edition Casting, Plant and Technology International  published the following article about the key role of Kerphalite KF for precision casting written by Joachim Wolff (Imerys Refractory Minerals), Sabine Umla-Latz and Martine Dahlmann (Hüttenes-Albertus).

Complex cast parts such as turbocharger housings play a central role in the design of modern high-performance engines. Due to its particular characteristics, silica sand has its limits as a moulding material when it comes to casting finely structured components, reduced wall thicknesses and perfect surfaces. Thanks to its high temperature load strength and a strong resistance to metal penetration, Kerphalite™ KF, a special sand produced in Brittany for special applications in the foundry industry, has proven itself suitable for these types of applications in many foundries.

In central Europe, silica sand is available in large quantities and in good qualities, and is widely used in foundries as an economical basic moulding material. But it also has negative properties, which may lead to problems when producing sophisticated castings. These particularly include the so-called quartz inversion, i.e. the abrupt expansion of the specific volume at 573°C. It occurs during virtually every casting process and may lead to sand expansion defects, mainly in the form of finning (also called veining). The moulding material can crack under high temperature load, allowing liquid metal to seep into the resulting cracks and cavities.
