2014 Imerys Sustainable Development Challenge

15 experts carefully examined the 94 projects submitted by the Groups’ workforce and the winners are….
Imerys Refractory Minerals proudly congratulates its South African teams ranked amongst the winners thanks to their “Local Farmers Support” project focusing on the development of three local agriculture cooperatives. These three projects target to create resource of sustainable income for local families. IRM supports these projects through financial support (budget and land), technical support (construction of agricultural building) as well as training.

Thus, for a five year period, the company will support Lehumo Agricultural Cooperative. Focusing on subsistence and semi-commercial vegetable farming, their production will permit 12 families to develop farming know-how and commercial opportunities by selling their products to the close-by supermarket. “Sedilame Farming cooperative” being part of the global project will be able to increase its egg production thanks to the construction of a new hen house. And finally the objective of the “Goodhope poultry farming cooperative” should be reached with the help of IRM. Their ambition is the creation of a small scale poultry farm by unemployed youth.

Thinking out of the box not only allows emergence of creative projects but stimulates commitment of the Imerys Refractory Minerals’ workforce to local communities.

ARGICAL PRO – Clay for crop protection

ARGICAL TM Pro is a calcined material especially designed to protect fruit on farms. Thanks to ARGICAL Pro, flies, worms and aphids cannot find nesting ground to lay eggs in the trees. It took over 4 years of development, testing and obtainment of the AMM license by the French ministry of agriculture to launch the product. As of2013 Argical Pro is distributed in France by our partner Uniphos, the market leader on the phytosanitary segment.

2014 IMA Recognition Award

Parkandillick Calciner (Molochite) UK received the 2014 IMA-Europe Industrial Minerals Association Recognition Award for “Safety – Developing Good Practices in Machinery Innovation” September 24th during the IMA annual conference in Brussels.
The Industrial Minerals Association acknowledged herewith the commitment of Operations Manager Brian Griggs- Trevarthen and his team to improve best practices on a day to day basis.
For several years, a problem appeared in a precise area at the plant where the bricks enter the crusher.  Workers had to stand on the platform above the crusher and guide or break calcined molochite bricks which would block the crushers’ mouth. This operation was potentially at high risk.
To find a solution, a cross function team was created to investigate ways of improving the situation. Suggested ideas were tested until the successful solution was found.  Looking at the entire production process the cross function team came up with a brick modification in such a way that it crushed more easily when dropped into the holding bin and crusher.

Chairman & CEO Gilles Michel commented: “These awards highlight the Group’s continuous process for operating excellence. They also reward our teams’ constant commitment and encourage us to keep up our Sustainable Development strategy.”

The group is stepping up its communication and visibility. Over many years, Imerys has invested in multiple companies, mines and assets to assemble a broad portfolio of products for the refractory market. Traditionally, these companies have maintained their regional identity and benefited from access to the broader Imerys Group to assist with research and development, innovation, geology and engineering.

In 2013, we as a sub-division of the group began the transition to a global organization, combining our refractory minerals assets and presenting ourselves to the market as Imerys Refractory Minerals.

Starting October 1st 2014 the Imerys Refractory Minerals division will use the following umbrella logo which will appear everywhere from invoices, to bulk bags and on company vehicles, brochures and business cards.

DURANDAL RX – A superfine andalusite

durandalRXDurandal TM RX is a superfine andalusite material milled to a particle size close to primary crystallites to increase reactivity within refractory compositions and assist the mineralogical transformation to mullite.
Using this material with unique properties like anisotropic dilatometry, the matrix and not only the aggregates of a refractory composition can be enriched in mullite content at a lower firing temperature and thus provide the final product with better thermal shock resistance.

ARGICAL M1000 – Metakaolin for concrete

Metakaolin is used as a key additive to concrete. Imerys launched its commercialization under the brand Argical™ M1000. Metakaolins’ specifications allow replacing a high quantity of cement without altering concrete performance. Imerys delivers Argical M1000 as a white color product. Customers appreciate the product as it may easily be added to concrete formulation and associated to color pigments.

The Bacalan bridge in Bordeaux may be considered as a flagship construction of Argical M1000. The 4 pylons were built with the proportional mix metakaolin – cement in order to recall the color of the buildings of the city of Bordeaux.
